As an out-of-state student here in Utah, I often hear other out-of-state students complaining about living in Utah and how the Beehive state just doesn’t measure up to their home states (certain southern Cali and Arizona natives seem to be the biggest culprits). “There’s nothing to do here” is the complaint I hear over and over, which leads me to wonder why are they living here then? Sure, Utah may not have warm beaches but it offers some of the most diverse and stunning landscape scenery offered in the continental U.S. How many states can boast both majestic mountains with unrivaled skiing and red, breathtaking deserts and canyons? Utah is home to both as well as massive sand dunes, the Salt Flats, and part of the Rocky Mountain chain. Ever been to Zion National Park? There is a trip definitely worth taking; the Narrows is truly one of the most awesome places I have ever been. Camping, hiking, skydiving, swimming, snowmobiling, skiing, fishing…just name the outdoor activity, Utah has it.
As for city life, Salt Lake City is not that bad either, especially this time of year. Salt Lake is a concert tour stop for a number of big name artists including Michael Buble, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, the Killers, and Joss Stone, all coming this summer. There are theaters featuring some of the most popular plays (Les Miserables is playing at the Pioneer Theater Company through June), and rather good shopping between The Gateway, Fashion Place Mall, and Nordstrom Rack (a bargain shopper’s dream). How about the always exciting Utah Jazz and Real soccer games for all the sports fans? Not to mention the numerous really, really good restaurants the city has to offer. Salt Lake City is clean, easy to navigate, and a great place to just relax and walk around (think Temple Square or the U of U campus).
And if you really need to get away, Las Vegas, Yellowstone National Park, and even Park City are just a drive away. So, you really can’t find anything to do? Give me a break
