Travis Ashton – Going to China For Stem Cell Treatment

April 13th, 2007 · 2 Comments

The radio hit a commercial break the other day and I heard an ad come up for an a capella jam. It piqued my interest because I’m familiar with one of the performing groups. I then found out that the concert was being held to raise money for Travis Ashton, an American Fork boy who is about to turn 18. He currently cannot use one of his arms and is unable to speak as a result of a car accident seven years ago. “Well that’s generous,” I think to myself.

Then the ad ends with this (paraphrased): “Funds are being raised so Travis can go to China for Stem Cell Treatment.” Wha? They’re raising money so he can leave the country to have an operation that is illegal here? Not to mention the fact that in ultra-conservative Utah, stem cell treatment is highly controversial. Now, I did my follow-up research to find that the treatment is from adult stem cells, which is far less of a heated topic. Nonetheless, why would you advertise that you are raising funds for someone to get stem cell treatment? Sounds crazy to me.

    “Sounds crazy to me.”

What do you know? You just a “nappy-headed ho.”

Kidding (I’m not going to lose my lucrative job of blog commenter, am I?). Seriously, though, what’s the big deal? He was in a terrible accident and he actually found a procedure that might help him use his arm and talk again – I say good job to them for full disclosure on what the funds are being used for.

My bigger question is… China? Their microwaves work for about 2 minutes – how are their stem cells going to be any better?
