I know the Utah legislature is busy debating important issues such as taxes and immigration, but I’m rather disappointed that Governor Hunstman has no plans to bring Henry’s Law to a special session of the legislature. The bill, named after a dog who survived being put in an oven, would make animal torture a felony. Recently, a spokesman for Huntsman confirmed the Governor has no plans to call the session.
Now, I wouldn’t label myself a hardcore, bleeding heart animal activist, but I do love animals, and it seems ridiculous that animal torture and cruelty is only a misdemeanor (putting a dog in an oven??). Isn’t past behavior the best indicator of the future? Such sick, demented actions should be a red flag about a person’s disposition and personality. There is no reason people who commit such twisted acts and crimes should get misdemeanors and light sentences such as probation. Both animal lovers and those who are not so fond of our furry friends have to agree that the torturing of helpless creatures is wrong and the punishment needs to fit the crime.
