Congratulations to fellow Utahan Julianne Hough! Last Tuesday she took the Dancing With the Stars trophy with Helio Castroneves. The stiff competition finally came down to the final couples and the votes came pouring in supporting Helio.

It was obvious from the way his face lit up when they finished that he wanted this win. Actually winning was just icing on the cake for him and Julianne. And did anyone else notice the kissing seemed to linger a litter longer than necessary? I can’t help but wonder if something’s going on between those two.

It gives us clumsy folks hope that with enough time and practice, the talents of a professional ballroom dancer can make almost anyone look like they know what they’re doing.

If you’ve haven’t heard yet, the winner of this season’s “So You Think You Can Dance” is Utahn Sabra Johnson. She took home the $250,000 prize and the title of “America’s favorite dancer.”

It seems that many of America’s best dancers have come from Utah, and they continue to win TV competitions and impress audiences. Johnson’s win is the second time in three months that a Utah dancer has won a TV competition. Speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno and his Utah-born partner, Julianne Hough, won the “Dancing With the Stars” title this May.

Two other contestants from Utah, Allison Holker and Jaymz Tuaileva from Orem, made it to the top 20 on “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Interestingly, Julianne Hough, former “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Ashley DelGross, and “So You Think You Can Dance” top twenty contestant Jaymz Tuaileva studied dance at the Center Stage Dance Studio in Orem, Utah.

Besides the two contestants from Orem, Utah, there are also two dancers who are LDS on the “So You Think You Can Dance” show, last season’s winner Benji Schwimmer and his cousin Heidi Groskreutz.

Maybe there is something in the water that makes Utah produces such great dancers (like the way Brazil produces such gorgeous models). Or maybe Utahns are just very artistically incilned and work hard to become America’s favorite dancers. Either way, keep an eye out for more Utahns to pop up on TV reality shows.

Betty Perry fell over the threshold of her front door as she was trying to escape the clutches of an officer in the process of handcuffing her, causing her cuts on her nose and a potentially bruised arm. While the world mourns her case and the tragedy of arresting a 70 year old woman, I say she deserved it. My arguments:

She wasn’t arrested for not watering her lawn. She was given a citation. She was arrested because she refused to give her name to the officer writing a citation.

The officer did not ever physically hurt Mrs. Perry or threaten her with violence. She hurt herself because she clumsily tried to escape arrest (if this were a 20-something thug, resisting arrest would be another crime…)

She looks like a weirdo just looking for attention. When news cameras came from across the country and across the world to get the 70 year old woman arrested for a brown lawn, she just happened to still be wearing the exact same outfit she had resisted arrest in, complete with blood stains.

So we’ve got an individual negligent of her duties to her neighborhood, resisting arrest, refusing to cooperate with the authorities, and then getting international fame for it just because she’s old and clumsy? She says she’s going to leave Orem before winter. I say good riddance. She can go neglect her yard somewhere else.

So, as a fairweather Jazz fan, I was naturally watching their tough 0-2 start in the NBA finals this year against the Houston Rockets. Needless to say, I’m sad about the outcomes, but still hopeful for at least the first round of the series.

Now, that aside, I have to comment on the caliber of commercials that they run for the Jazz. This is a team that pays their players millions of dollars every year. They’re in the NBA finals. They’ve got a winning record. They’ve produced some great teams. Their commercials? Directed by Sophomores in High School. And not even the tech-savvy ones in the A/V club. These are the kids who had to are directing the commercials on work release from the local juvie.

They really look like they were filmed with a camcorder during a half time in the mid-season when the Jazz were off their hot streak and just looking for some time to kill. If people are pouring the money they do into these professional sports (especially when they have a good year) lets at least get them some respectable TV spots to match.

Good Day Utah? Good Things Utah? I feel like I’m walking into a women’s organization. Is a guy even allowed to watch something called “Good Things *blank*?” Now, to be honest, I usually don’t have much time for TV in the morning. Maybe that’s what they’re banking on: guys going off to work so the wives can stay at home, knitting sweaters, sipping cocoa, and watching ladies in turtlenecks talk about good things going on.

If anyone out there has any input on what local channels can call their morning show, someone suggest a man-type morning show. Maybe something like “Get yer butt outta bed already, Utah” or “Sleeping In Again, eh Utah?”

So I’ve noticed that whenever I’m watching American Idol (guilty pleasure, sorry) the only commercial portion used by Fox13 is to tell you that they’ll be discussing the results of American Idol. That doesn’t seem like much news to me. I mean, I’m watching the show. Right now. I know which contestants the judges liked and which they didn’t. Because I’m watching the show. Right now.

That’s like a commercial coming on right before a scene in an action movie that says “find out who Bond shot, tonight at 11.” Then it cuts back to the movie where Bond shoots Dr. Frankenbright. It seems like that would be pretty valuable ad space due to the popularity of American Idol. Why waste it on non-news? C’mon Fox 13.
