Women Tech Council Award Finalists

Founded in 2007, Utah’s very own Women Tech Council is an organization devoted to providing leadership and advocacy for women working within technology companies and careers. The Women Tech Council recently announced the award finalists for the 2009 Annual Women Tech Awards, which spotlights women in the Utah community who are “driving innovation and leading technology companies.” Congrats to all the finalists!

Yes, you heard me right. But no, I am not extremely angry, frustrated, or even amusing myself by shouting obscenities. I am actually spreading the word to all my fellow Utahns about the latest and greatest apparel to hit the Wastach Front: a Back the F:\ Up t-shirt. That’s right, one of these babies could be yours.

How, you ask? Well, the rules are simple. Secrets on BYU Campus

Most students and alumni that are or have attended BYU learn tips, tricks, and secrets involving how to survive BYU classes. A group of BYU marketing students put together a blog for reveling these hidden gems to the general public.

Visitors can submit new secrets to help everyone from freshman to faculty in working the system at BYU. Looks like they have posts about best NCMO spots, free food, learning how to get out of a dreaded campus parking ticket, and much more.

Run For It!

My co-workers and I have decided to start training for a half-marathon…sometime next year. But, if you are all ready to run, there are several marathons here in Utah that are coming up really quick.

On Thanksgiving morning there is a 4 mile run or a 2 mile walk where all proceeds will go to charity. They even give away turkeys and pies. Kind of a win-win situation, if you ask me.

If you have ever looked into attending Film School, you know how expensive it can be–especially at a well-known school in L.A. or New York. Well, a new film school is opening in Utah for those who want to study film making, but can’t quite afford it. Emerson Smith College is opening a new branch of the school in Springville. Emerson Smith opens on October 1st and offers full-ride scholarships for second year students if they do well during their first year. A year’s tuition at this Liberal Art’s school is a little less than $9,500. If you have always wanted to study film making, now is your chance.

LDS Church to buy Facebook?

That’s the rumor I read on Venturebeat this morning.

Seems ridiculous – I agree with the theory that some LDS people are probably buying employee shares (which the company is currently allowing them to sale). Possibly the LDS church themselves is buying these shares, but that seems more unlikely to me. If so, though, props to them…

Doggy, I Do

For many people, their wedding is one of the major highlights of their lives. But apparently marriage isn’t just a human event anymore. Many animals are now taking the plunge…thanks to Pet Weds. Cats can marry dogs, goats can marry fish. It doesn’t matter the match up to Reverend Tyker (a little dog that wears a suit), he is just happy to officiate at such an auspicious occasion. Reverend Tyker’s credentials are on the site for your viewing pleasure.

Here’s a nice little snippet from the website: “WED THAT BULL TO THE WHOLE HERD! MAKE AND [sic] HONEST MAN OUT OF YOUR RAM IF THEY’VE BRED……GET THEM WED! STAMP OUT ILLEGITIMATE CRITTER LITTERS!” When your pets marry, you even get an “official” marriage certificate…because just going through the ceremony isn’t weird enough.

But Pet Weds refuses to marry humans to animals…good call. So, luckily they cater to the eccentric rather than the perverted.

Utah Company Makes Advances in Airline Safety

No doubt you’ve heard in the past about airplanes and passengers being grounded for hours due to wiring problems. Or perhaps you’ve actually had the misfortune of being one of those passengers. LiveWire Test Labs, a Utah based company, may have found more efficient ways to inspect the wiring of airplanes, especially aging ones. Researchers have been developing a device that would detect intermittent faults in aircraft wiring. The device would warn in advance of changes that need to be made during routine maintenance checks.

It may sound like nothing extraordinary initially but their advanced research would enable more effective detection of wiring in need of repair or replacement without the inconvenient and costly down time – a major plus for passengers.

Stone Arch Collapsed

This last week at Arches National Park, one of the famous stone arches collapsed. Out of the park’s 2000 arches, Wall Arch was ranked 12th in size at a height of 33 feet and a width of 71 feet. And apparently no one witnessed the arch collapse.

The trail up to that arch is currently closed off. Hopefully the rest of the arches will stand strong for quite a while.
