I-15 is littered with billboards…from Omniture to the Humane Society (Make animal torture a felony!) to Xango to UFirst to Dirty Joe’s Adult Novelty Store (by the the Provo Center Street exit…in case you were wondering), driving is never boring along the interstate. Everyone who’s anyone has paid a hefty chunk of their advertising budget for the chance to be seen by thousands of Utah motorists. Just how much do these companies pay a month to be seen by you? $1,000? $5,000? Even $10,000? I really don’t know but I’m guessing it is quite a bit. And most likely it is well worth it. My husband and I had never before been to Tai Pan Trading…until we saw their billboard. We turned off, went in, and in one trip, paid for their monthly billboard fee.

Move over super juices! Detoxifying foot baths are now available to cure all your ailments!

A number of spas and health clubs located throughout the state are now offering special foot baths that supposedly help alleviate a wide variety of health problems.

Participants soak their feet for 30 minutes and an employee adds an “ionizer” to begin the process. The water starts out clear but over the 30 minutes, it begins to turn murky and quite frankly…disgusting, as toxins are “pulled from the body.”

KSL conducted an investigation and took a hidden camera inside one health spa that offered the controversial detoxification method to find out what all the buzz was about. Employees claimed that the foot baths helped people with fibromyalgia, arthritis, chronic fatigue, and even cancer. Say what?

Two doctors interviewed by KSL both said this method of detoxification is impossible and individuals using it are most likely experiencing a placebo effect. Despite that, some users swear it has helped them for the better.

What do you think…are detoxifying foot baths legit or a load of crap? Or has anyone actually tried one??

I first heard about this on 97.1 zht and unfortunately, I am now unable to enjoy a diet coke with lemon whenever I go out to eat.

The Salt Lake City health department reports that when you order that side of lemon, you are often squeezing more than just lemon juice into your drink – more like germs. Everything from fecal bacteria to the germs that cause staff infections were found on lemons tested throughout the state.

Bare-hand contact with ready to eat foods (such as lemons) and neglecting hand-washing both constitute health code violations for employees, but those may be some of the possible sources of the germs. Another possible source of contamination could be from the actual rind of the lemon; if they were not washed, they could have been contaminated long before the restaurant received them.

Well, that’s enough to make me lose my cookies. No more lemons for me! Or limes…I’m guessing it’s probably the same story.

Forbes just released a study about the rate of plastic surgery in different cities around the country. There was no surprise that Miami and LA were high on this list, but Utah, it’s time to be proud. Salt Lake City ranked the top city IN THE NATION for plastic surgery, and for being the vainest city in the US. Salt Lake City? Wow.

Forbes ranked their study by looking at a few different aspects, including the number of plastic surgeons per 100,000 people. SLC has 6 (New York City has 4).

Salt Lake City, I gotta hand it to you. With websites offering information about plastic surgery in Utah, there are plenty of resources to turn to. You too can keep up with Mrs. Jones and her new chin. Or boobs. Or tummy. Or thighs. Or…I could go on forever.

The Poison Control Center has issued a warning about the danger of “overdosing” on energy drinks. Although the drinks aren’t harmful if you have one, apparently some people like college students drink too many and experience unpleasant side effects such as vomiting, headaches, heart palpitations, and nausea.

The problem seems to be that people overdose and call the poison control center for help, who are sometimes unsure what to do because of the scarce listings of ingredients on the energy drinks.

If you are pulling an all-nighter and need an energy kick, the Poison Control Center advises you try real food instead of energy drinks, such as eating whole-graim carbs, fruits, and veggies.

This just proves that people (particularly college students) should read the labels on food closer. With so much caffeine in energy drinks, it’s like drinking too many cups of coffee. Overall, people just need to watch what they put in their body better.

She purchased the can in a Wal-Mart in American Fork, and opened it to feed to her sons. Upon discovery of the additional protein in her beans, however, she decided against it.

Although this story is disgusting, it takes a stranger turn. Allens Inc., a company located in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, offered her $100 as a <del>bribe</del> “gesture of goodwill” for one of the most disgusting and disturbing things that can come out of a can of beans.

The woman turned down the $100 and says she refuses to return the can or mouse parts to the company. I smell a lawsuit here…

Apparently Utah County’s Health Department just issued a bat warning because of an increase in bat activity this September. Bats have been spotted throughout Utah County, including at Lehi High School. All I can say is that I’m glad I don’t go to that high school anymore!

Obviously, you should stay away from bats because they can carry ticks, fleas, and even parasites on their bodies. Rabies can be transmitted without being bitten, but just by holding a sick bat. Be especially cautious of bat droppings because they can cause lung problems, called histoplasmosis. Since less than 1% of bats carry rabies, you are more likely to hurt yourself running away from bats than actually being hurt from a bat.

Luckily, none of the 18 bat species in Utah feed on blood, only irritating insects such as roaches.

If you do find a bat hiding out, don’t intentionally kill it because you may be arrested! The only chemical approved by the EPA that you can use is naphthalene as an indoor repellant.

Or just face your chiroptophobia, or fear of bats, like Bruce Wayne (aka Batman.)

OK, I have lived in Utah for 5 years now and I get that MLM’s are very much a part of the landscape here.

So here is the Utah Gossip challenge – if you sell nutricutical products (drinks, pills, potions, anything!) and you are willing to provide us with a sample we will review the products for free on this site.

Why are we doing this? I’m skeptical of all the claims made about all these things but people really seem to believe they work. Whether it’s Xango, Tahitian Noni, Goyin, NuSkin, Usana, etc. we’ll try it out and write about our experience.

Please note that we are in no way obligated to write a positive review (though the review won’t necessarily be negative). We just want unbiased information available to the general public. If you’re product really is the best let us prove it.
