In the time it took you to read this, 50,000 Utahns got married. Ok, not quite, but in a place where weddings are as abundant as clouds in the sky, I think it’s high time we addressed the most absurd, horrid, and downright tacky wedding trends that seem to be so prevalent in this state. Welcome to Utah Gossip’s Wedding Etiquette 101!

Invitations
* Only the names of those you are inviting to the wedding should be on the addressed envelope, the invitation, and the RSVP cards (if you have them). If you do not want children attending, leave their names off.
* Do not include registry cards in the invitations – in the world of wedding etiquette, doing so is considered extremely tacky and rude. You can include where you are registered on the bridal shower invitations and traditionally, guests are supposed to ask the mother of the bride for registry information. This most definitely applies to those obnoxious matrimoney cards.

Catering
* What you serve at your wedding should really depend on what time of day it is. 7 p.m. and later is appropriate for desserts, hor dourves, and drinks, while anything earlier should include an actual meal.
* How much food should you serve? The typical rule of thumb is for every guest, you should serve 1/2 pound uncooked meat, 1/4 pound side dishes, and 1-2 desserts. Check with your preferred SLC caterer to see what they would suggest.

Receiving Lines
* It is considered proper wedding etiquette to have a receiving line if you have more than 50 guests. Since those guests are there to celebrate your big day, it gives you chance to acknowledge them.
* The line typically includes the bride’s parents, groom’s parents, and the couple; however, some include the entire bridal party and grandparents (if they can).
* Divorced parents should not be situated next to one another in the receiving line; otherwise, they will be assumed a couple.

Guest Attire
* If you are attending a wedding, DO NOT wear jeans. A wedding is a formal event and you should dress accordingly. It’s fine for women to wear pants as long as they are formal dress pants. Men should wear at least a tie, if not a suit.
* Avoid wearing white. Need we say more?

I met a grandma the other day who really wanted to surprise her granddaughter (and a few friends) with tickets to the upcoming Stadium of Fire concert at BYU. There was only one problem – within minutes of going on sale all of the tickets were sold.

OK, I figured it was just a popular show and I know how all those little girls love Hannah Montana so I didn’t think much of it. Then I met some guys, though, who bought tickets just to resell to other people – lame. A show at BYU… and we’re dealing with scalpers?!

Oh well – I guess the people who really want them will find them on sites like tickex… just sucks that the people who really wanted them have to pay more because of these opportunists.

But next time you’re filling up at the pump, angry at the world because those #@$#(%! oil companies keep jacking up the price of oil and thus bleeding you dry, take comfort in knowing that Utah has some of the lowest gas prices in the nation – fifth lowest, to be exact, with an average of $3.03 a gallon (as reported by AAA).

I know…it’s little consolation. “The Federal Trade Commission has ruled that oil companies are not gouging customers. They say, technically, they’re screwing customers.” Amen, David Letterman

My commute down to work really sucks sometimes. As it did yesterday morning. I was already running late so when I hopped onto I-15 I cruised into the far left “fast” lane, only to slam on my brakes and slow down to the pace of a snail. Traffic was heavy and after riding along at barely 40 mph for a few minutes, I eventually was able to squeeze into the other lane. I began to pass the cars on my left and soon realized what the source of the delay was…a woman in her car yappin’ away on her phone, entirely unaware of her driving speed (or lack thereof). She seemed completely oblivious to the middle fingers and shaking fists pointed in her direction.

I’m sure most of you can relate…and if you can’t, you soon will. For Utah is a melting pot of bad, irresponsible, and discourteous drivers – no offense, but I would dare say most Utah natives and transplants would agree with me.

But I digress…

Just yesterday the Utah House of Representative recently unanimously approved House Bill 402, which essentially make slow cars get out of the way or get a ticket. Primarily proposed for two-lane canyon highways, the bill would require a driver to pull over in safe spot if five or more vehicles were following closely behind and let the other cars pass. The bill addresses not only the obvious frustrations such drivers cause, but safety issues as well; if traffic (or the slow car) stops suddenly, it can cause accidents.

Thank freakin’ goodness. What’s more annoying than an overly-cautious driver going 15 under the speed limit?

Last night, my husband and I were driving home from work (Orem to Holladay) when we got caught in the mother of all blizzards. It took us 3 1/2 hours to drive home (about 35-40 miles), and it seemed that the point of the mountain was the worst. There were cars stranded all over the road – they were either stuck or out of gas, or both. The snow was up to a foot deep on the freeway at points – more on the shoulders. The plows couldn’t get through because of all the traffic.

I grew up in the Bay Area, home to bad traffic, but the one redeeming fact is that you have options. If one freeway is bad, take another one. In Utah, however, if I-15 is bad, there really aren’t any options. You’re stuck. Sometimes frontage roads can offer an alternative, but during last night’s storm, the frontage roads were either closed, or in worse shape than the freeway because of the snow blowing everywhere.

Sooo…I think Utah needs to start thinking about building some more alternate roads. I don’t mean like Bangerter Highway, which has stoplights, and is kind of a joke. I mean real freeways that can take commuters where they need to go in the shortest amount of time. Enough worrying about the tree frogs, or whatever creatures are holding back the much needed freeways. UDOT, let’s get them built!

Any of you have crappy commute stories? Share them with us! We’d love to hear about them so we can rant about Utah’s lame freeway system.

Ok, this is a totally lame story. Apparently, Joshua McFarlane got fed up over his neighbor’s dog barking, so he waited with a butcher knife until the dog stuck his nose through a gap in the fence, and stabbed it in the face. The dog required stitches to close the wound and stop the bleeding.

Mr. McFarlane should have (and could have) handled the situation any other way – filing a complaint with animal control, talking with the owners – anything other than stabbing the poor dog. He can’t claim that he snapped, either, because he was obviously waiting with a knife for the dog to stick his nose through the fence.

This is such a sick story – I don’t understand what would make someone do something like this. We’ve all heard annoying dogs barking all night, but seriously, who stabs the dog in the face? Work out the problem with the owners – don’t attack the animal. Stabbing the dog only makes you look like a crazy moron. Of course, someone that would do something like this probably is a crazy moron.

Once again, we need to pass Henry’s Law. Go to HelpUsHelpThem.org, and sign the petition. Animal torture should be a felony in Utah.

Keep in mind, that Angora rabbits are not “wild” or native rabbits to Utah. These were someone’s pets that they simply let go. The rabbits were not in good shape – their fur was matted and dirty, and many were injured, according to KSL. Utah, come on. Pass Henry’s Law and give the animals in Utah some protection. There has been enough unpunished animal cruelty – it’s time something was done to make these animal abusers think twice. Let’s protect our animals, Utah!

Utah was ranked by the Animal Legal Defense Fund as having the weakest animal abuse laws in the entire country. (Right at the bottom with Utah was Alaska, Arkansas, Kentucky, and North Dakota.) This is unacceptable, Utah! Nearly every day, we hear a story of high school kids pulling pranks such as stealing and killing a sheep, and hanging it from their rival football team’s crossbars. Or stomping a pheasant to death because it wandered onto a football field.

This is NOT normal behavior! Kids have been taught to treat animals without any kindness, and many people here have the (medieval) theory that animals don’t have any type of feelings. Yes, they can feel pain. Stomping a pheasant to death is a cruel, terrible way for the poor bird to die, yet kids did it without any thoughts that it might be a terrible and cruel thing to do. Killing and torturing animals is not funny or acceptable!

Utah needs to pass Henry’s Law, a law that would make animal cruelty a felony. (Currently in Utah, harming and abusing animals is just a misdemeanor, if it’s even prosectured.) Utah needs to get out of the dark ages, and work to protect animals. There are strong correlations between people abusing animals and then moving on to abuse people.

This low ranking is an embarassment to Utah. We need to step it up, and take care of our animals. They deserve better from us.

I agree that what he did was wrong…but it was a stupid, thoughtless, juvenile prank! He should be punished fairly for his actions but not like that. Registering this young man as a sex offender would cause much more lasting damage and pain to him than any of the children that may have seen his naked bum! Utah needs to be more concerned about “real” predators such as this man…and this man…and this man.
