So the other day I got an Icee at a Maverik in Orem. The total was $.84 and I didn’t have cash. Feeling bad about making them pay credit card processing charges for an order under a buck, I used my debit card. No biggie.

Then, a few days later I was shocked to discover I had an extra $20 charged on there that I didn’t account for. I called Maverik’s head offices and got a cell phone # for the owner of that Maverik. Ross, the owner, was very nice and assured us he’d get the $20 back. I was mostly concerned with the guy losing his job, since he’s probably done that to more than just us. I brought up this concern and Ross told me to forget getting fired, he’d get him arrested. He then casually mentioned that this happens almost weekly at Maverik (not that particular store, but franchise-wide).

Not horribly shocking news to find out that convenience store attendants aren’t the pinnacle of virtue, but still. So next time you’re in a Maverik (or probably any other gas station, really), make sure you run the card as a credit card and check the receipt before you go.
