70 Year Old Orem Woman Arrested for Not Watering Her Lawn?

July 10th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Betty Perry fell over the threshold of her front door as she was trying to escape the clutches of an officer in the process of handcuffing her, causing her cuts on her nose and a potentially bruised arm. While the world mourns her case and the tragedy of arresting a 70 year old woman, I say she deserved it. My arguments:

  1. She wasn’t arrested for not watering her lawn. She was given a citation. She was arrested because she refused to give her name to the officer writing a citation.
  2. The officer did not ever physically hurt Mrs. Perry or threaten her with violence. She hurt herself because she clumsily tried to escape arrest (if this were a 20-something thug, resisting arrest would be another crime…)
  3. She looks like a weirdo just looking for attention. When news cameras came from across the country and across the world to get the 70 year old woman arrested for a brown lawn, she just happened to still be wearing the exact same outfit she had resisted arrest in, complete with blood stains.

So we’ve got an individual negligent of her duties to her neighborhood, resisting arrest, refusing to cooperate with the authorities, and then getting international fame for it just because she’s old and clumsy? She says she’s going to leave Orem before winter. I say good riddance. She can go neglect her yard somewhere else.

Ok…I agree with you to an extent….she should have cooperated…the arrest was legit (refusing to give her name when being cited) and she hurt herself due to her own clumsiness. However, this could have all been avoided if the cop wasn’t citing her for a brown lawn! Since when is it the duty of an officer to go around enforcing green lawns? Give me a break…the Orem police need to find something better to do.
