Mentorships…Coming to a Town Near You!

July 17th, 2007 · No Comments

So here is something very cool I heard about that I thought I would share. My best friend Erin, was attending the University of Utah and wanted to apply for the Communication Technology program. The program is a technology orientation into electronic media (radio, internet, and broadcasting and television) that acquaints students with the intricacies of programming, production, and management, among other aspects, of such media.

With such a competitive and difficult program and paying nearly $12,000 a year in non-resident tuition fees (in-state is about $4,000 a year), Erin opted to do a “mentorship” over further pursuing conventional higher education. A mentorship, you ask? Yes, much like a historical apprenticeship. A mentorship program contracts with a media company in the television broadcasting or radio industry and pairs them with a student within the same area. A professional from such a company becomes the student’s mentor and provides one-on-one training. This not only provides the mentor with a hand-picked intern, but the student gains valuable, in-depth relevant work experience in the very field they want to establish a career in. The price of such a program is very comparable to the traditional college tuition fees, and perhaps even less, as in Erin’s case.

Sounds pretty sweet, huh? What’s great about this is there is no age limit, and since the training is done one-on-one, it can be accommodated to fit any schedule. If you are interested in learning more, check out Get A Mentor…a popular mentorship program that provides training in film and video production, radio and television, and recording/sound engineering.
